Application of sodium thiosulfate in aquaculture

Sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3), also known as baking soda, is one of the commonly used preparations in aquaculture. Sodium thiosulfate is a crystal substance that is easy to dissolve in water and has strong reducibility. It can detoxify and improve water quality. The specific application of sodium thiosulfate will be explained below.

  1. Remove residual chlorine from water. Sodium thiosulfate can reduce chlorine gas to hydrochloric acid, so it can be used to remove the toxicity of free chlorine in water for ponds that often use chlorine preparation.
  2. It can be used to degrade insecticide toxins. Its good reducibility can be used to degrade the toxicity of organophosphorus insecticides, which has been proved to be suitable for fish poisoning caused by excessive organophosphorus insecticides.
  3. It can degrade the toxicity of cyanide, and its good ion exchange function has certain effect on reducing the heavy metal toxicity in water.
  4. It can release sulfur atoms in water, so it has a certain bactericidal effect.

Misapplication of sodium thiosulfate

Sodium thiosulfate is a kind of preparation often used by many farmers. People’s understanding of its effect is a little exaggerated. They think it is an all-around water conditioner. In fact, its main effect is detoxification, and the scope of detoxification is relatively narrow, which is not suitable for regular use.

Moreover, sodium thiosulfate can change the redox balance of water, which may aggravate the hypoxia when the water condition is relatively weak. Therefore, great attention should be paid to the use of algae, floating head, rainy days can not be used to prevent accidental losses.

Usage and dosage

Use 500-1000 g of this product for 1 mu water depth. This product is easy to absorb moisture and decompose by heating, and should be kept dry and cool
